World Languages

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the World Languages Department is to educate students who are linguistically and culturally prepared to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad.  The goal is to develop and maintain proficiency in at least one other language, modern or classical, as well as to develop further proficiencies in the students’ first language.

OBJECTIVES

“Through our efforts, guidance, and delivery of curricular objectives, each student will be able”:

  • To use the target language effectively both in oral and written work.
  • To comprehend spoken and written language.
  • To develop an appreciation and greater understanding of the cultures of other countries.
  • To acquire insight into a variety of ways of viewing the world.
  • To acquire the ability to communicate in meaningful and appropriate ways with users of other languages.

See the Course Description Booklet for more details.

In April the World Languages department had Bring Your Mom to Work Day.

Spanish

Why study Spanish?

  • Spanish speaking people currently make up 15% of the American population.
By 2050 that number is projected to be 30%
  • Employers are seeking applicants who can speak Spanish in nearly every profession and paying a premium price for their services.
  • Spanish is the official language in 21 countries.
  • Studying Spanish develops a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture, from reading Cervantes to admiring Picasso, and enjoying Spanish cuisine.
  • Research indicates that knowing and using two languages reduces your chances of developing dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease.
